The Power of a HUG event at the Senedd, Cardiff

On December 7th 2023, HUG by LAUGH co-hosted an event with University of the West of England Bristol, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Gwent Regional Partnership Board and Life Sciences Hub Wales. The event was held at the Senedd, Welsh Parliament, and showcased the success of HUG in supporting peoples’ wellbeing.  Since 2022, 500 HUGs have been independently evaluated across Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, commissioned by Gwent Regional Partnership Board, with an evaluation conducted by Tec Cymru via Welsh Government funding.

The event was sponsored and attended by Vaughan Gething, Minister for Economy, with a welcome address from AHRC executive chair Prof Christopher Smith.  There were presentations from Chris Maddocks (Alzheimer’s Society), Suzy Webster (Dementia UK) and case studies from the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Research findings from the ABUHB evaluation were presented by health professionals as case study stories that highlighted the ‘life changing’ benefits of HUG in the care of people living with dementia, autism, learning disability, and adults and children living with mental health challenges.
